Johnny Depp: Jack Sparrow ‘will die off-screen in new Pirates movie’ – But there's hope

There are at least two Pirates of the Caribbean movies in the works at Disney, with the last having been 2017’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. While in the UK the fifth outing was known as Salazar’s Revenge. One of the new sequels is Pirates of the Caribbean 6, a direct sequel to the latter, while the other is Margot Robbie’s female-led spin-off.
Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow may be the lead and face of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise but the star and his character are currently not connected to any future movies in the series.
Since the 58-year-old lost his libel case in the UK courts his Hollywood future has been far from clear, with Warner Bros asking him to resign from playing Grindelwald in their Fantastic Beasts movies.
In fact, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney “baulked” at producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s suggestion that Depp cameo as Sparrow in the next Pirates adventure.
Even without the star, his character lives on in the Pirates of the Caribbean universe, although that might be about to change according to a new report.
We Got This Covered’s sources, the same ones who correctly predicted that [spoiler] would be returning to the MCU in Shang-Chi, report that Disney intend to kill Jack Sparrow off-screen – but there’s a catch.
Whether in Pirates of the Caribbean 6 or Margot Robbie’s spin-off, apparently the narrative will establish that Depp’s character has died.
However, the outlet added: “Several characters will reportedly discuss whispers that he’s faked his own demise in order to escape the latest bounty on his head, thus leaving the door ever so slightly ajar for a return down the line.”
Such a move would mean that Disney can go ahead with the Pirates franchise without Depp, but potentially bring him back one day.
Presumably, this would be akin to the Jurassic World movies, which are set in the same universe as the Jurassic Park trilogy and only now are bringing back the original film’s leading cast.
Sam Neill’s Alan Grant, Laura Dern’s Ellie Sattler and Jeff Goldblum’s Ian Malcolm (who cameoed in Fallen Kingdom) are returning in Jurassic World: Dominion next year.
While some of Depp’s fans may be unwilling to see a Pirates movie without Captain Jack, introducing new characters and then potentially bringing him back later could act as a good way of rebooting the franchise and keeping it fresh.
But aside from Pirates 6 and Robbie’s spin-off, a new report claims that Disney have a third movie in the works that will go straight to Disney+.
