- no candidate won majority of the popular vote; the election went to the House
- Henry Clay backed JQA, who then made Clay Secretary of State after being inaugurated
- AJ called it BS & it split the dem-repub party

effect:
- JQA's presidency was unpopular
- congress blocked many of his ideas
> he had good ideas tho (like funding scientific research & improving econ) but he had zero support
- supported AJ's campaign
