11 h 30 min, 28 sept. 1781 ans - Battle of Yorktown

Description:

George Washington, Count Jean Baptiste de Rochambeau, commander of the French expeditionary force in America, and Admiral François Joseph Paul de Grasse, commander of the French fleet in American waters–set out to trap Cornwallis at Yorktown. Washington and Rochambeau marched a French-American army from New York City to join other French forces under Lafayette in Virginia, while de Grasse sailed with additional troops for Chesapeake Bay and the York River. These operations were perfectly timed and executed, and they caught Cornwallis between land and sea. After a few shows of resistance, he gave in on October 17, 1781. Two days later, a military band played the old tune “The World Turn'd Upside Down,” Cornwallis sent a deputy who surrendered the British army of more than seven thousand men.
