Description:

-John Marshall was the fourth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and expanded the judicial branch and federal government
-Marbury vs. Madison: Right before Jefferson became president, Adams passed the Judiciary Act (Created openings for federal judges) and filled seats with Federalist judges (Midnight judges). Jefferson refused to give the appointments, but one of the supposed judges, Marbury claimed he had a right to it. Marshall concluded that while he did have a right to the appointment, the Judiciary Act was unconstitutional.
-Judicial review: The Supreme Court is the final interpretation of the Constitution (Could declare laws unconstitutional)
-McCulloch vs. Maryland: Debated whether the federal government has a right to set up a federal bank and whether states could tax federal banks. Marshall concluded that federal government could set up a bank and they states couldn't tax the government because national law trumps state law when they clash
