19 nov 1794 - Jay Treaty
Description:
Washington sends Chief Justice John Jay on a special mission to Britain to talk it out of its offensive practice of searching and seizing American ships and impressing seamen into the British navy. Jay brings back the Jay Treaty, in which Britain agrees to evacuate its post on the US western frontier. The treaty says nothing about British seizures of American merchant ships. It angers American supporters of France but maintain Washington's policy of neutrality, which kept the US at peace.
