-French were slower to explore than other European countries because they were busy warring between Catholics and Protestant Hugenots
-Wanted to find the Northwest Passage (sea route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans to trade with Asia)
-Interested in trade (fish and fur) over conquest
-Relatively low french colonizers, mostly established trading settlements
-Some married Native for kinship ties to Native trading
