25 sept. 2017 - Kurds seek independance
Description:
Kurdistan votes on an independance referendum in which 92.73% are in favor of independence from Iraq. Rather than declaring independence immediately, Kurdistan plans to negotiate and state-build with Iraq, however, the Supreme Court denies legality of the referendum, ruling that no Iraqi territory may secede.
While Kurdistan accepts the Supreme Court ruling, they lose roughly 20% of their territory in response and the Kirkuk oil fields, its main source of revenue, through force of the Iraqi military.
