15 janv. 2004 - JTJ → AQI
Description:
Following the US invasion of Iraq, the Sunni jihadist group, JTJ, still under leadership by al-Zarqawi, pledges allegiance to Al-Qaeda and calls itself Al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI), working to expel the US-led coalition from Iraq, and to set up an Islamic state in SWANA.
Within a few months, AQI orchestrates a wave of suicide bombings, striking against Shia Muslim holy sites in Baghdad and Karbala. The attacks kill hundreds, stoking sectarian resentment. In Fallujah, meanwhile, four U.S. troops are killed, burned, and hung from a bridge, with video of the slaughter beamed around the world. A U.S. marine (pictured) writes a tribute on a bridge in Fallujah, Iraq, where the bodies of the troops were hung.
