4 mars 1861 - Abraham Lincoln Inauguration

Description:

Just before Lincoln’s inauguration, the Lower South states had already seceded from the Union, and although Lincoln provided multiple key points in his inaugural address, including a plea for peace and reassuring the South that slavery would continue, the South stuck with their decision to leave the United States. The tension between anti-slavery and pro-slavery sentiments had gotten so bad that many had even believed that Lincoln would get assassinated on the way to the Capitol Building in Washington DC. Abraham Lincoln’s inauguration not only admitted Lincoln into office, but it also served as a last cry for peace for the Southern states, which failed. In return, 6 weeks after his inauguration, the attack on Fort Sumter would occur, which would lead to the Upper South seceding as well, leading to the beginning of the Civil War.
