1 oct. 1957 - Arkansas National Guard Takes Over for The 101st Division

Just a week after the arrival of the 101st Airline Division, it left to let the Arkansas National Guard try and take over. When Melba arrived that morning, fully expecting to see Danny and the rest of the 101st Division, she was confused, and was forced to fend for herself through the battlefield. She had thought for the first half of the day, that there were no soldiers inside of Central High, but then she saw them "Slouching against the wall were members of the Arkansas National Guard, looking on like spectators at a sports event-certainly not like men sent to guard our safety" (Beals 118). These men had no care for any of the 9, and would do nothing to help protect Melba and the other 8, even when Melba was on the brink of burning alive. After the whole day, it was a failed experiment and the 101st Airline Division would be sent back the next day. This event helped show Melba how the next couple of months would look like, and much the 101st did for them. Without the 101st, Melba and the other 8 wouldn't have survived the school year.
