4 sept. 1957 - Melba Attempts to Attend Central High

Description:

This day was the first day back at school, and when Melba arrived at Central High for her first day, there was a mob of people surrounding the building. These people were threatening to take her life, and calling her and her family slurs. Melba then saw Elizabeth at the top of the stairs attempting to get into Central High, but the guards won't let them in. That's when Melba and the other 8 students realized that the guards weren't to keep them safe inside, but rather to keep them out. Then the mob saw Melba, she sprinted away to the car with her mom to get away from the mob that was clearly trying to kill her and stop integration. She got in the car with her mom and "One of the men caught up and pounded his fists on the hood of our car, while another threw a brick at the windshield" (Beals 39). These men were dedicated to stop integration, and would do whatever it took to stop it from happening.
