Daoud Khan is killed in another coup d'etat, this time carried out by a temporarily reunited PDPA. The new regime sets forth massive social reform that opposed traditional Islamic values and is met with strong opposition by much of the country. Close ties with the Soviet Union are established, however, the PDPA begins to face tensions from within that set the groundwork for another split.
