Description:

Despite previous long-standing policy intended to influence a peaceful resolution, the US under President Donald J. Trump recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem the following year.

Foreign leaders such as those of Egypt, France, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the UK (as well as the UN Secretary-General) criticize this change. Protests and violence erupt throughout East Jerusalem, Gaza, and the West Bank, as well as in Egypt, Iran, Iraq, and Jordan.
