Nationalism and Anti-imperialism - Chinese students and intellectuals were frustrated with their government's inability to protect Chinese sovereignty. The perceived weakness of the Chinese government in the face of foreign powers, particularly Japan, galvanized public sentiment and led to widespread protests.
