The Arc of the United States was founded by parents of individuals with both intellectual and developmental disabilities to advocate for their children. Their mission statement is "To provide people with intellectual, developmental, and other disabilities the ordinary and extraordinary opportunities of life" (The Arc NY). The organization started when two families from the Bronx were denied public schooling due to their children's disabilities. The organization addresses educational issues, and they also fundraise and spread awareness in the public. (The Arc NY)
