- Isolation—many lived miles away from neighbors, leading to psychological strain.
- Lack of trees—settlers built sod houses (made of packed dirt and grass) and burned cow dung for fuel.
- Many failed due to the unforgiving environment, but those who succeeded contributed to the massive agricultural expansion of the Great Plains.
