- Pullman Palace Car Company owned a “company town” where workers lived and shopped.
- When another economic panic hit (1893), Pullman cut wages but increased rent, leaving workers in severe financial distress.
- Led by Eugene V. Debs, workers organized a strike against Pullman.
- The Attorney General issued an injunction (court order) to break the strike.
- President Cleveland sent federal troops, justifying it by claiming the strike interfered with U.S. mail delivery.
- Debs was arrested, later emerging as a key figure in the Socialist movement.
