15 sept. 1922 - Chanak Crisis (Political)
Description:
A little while after the end of the first world war, early 1920's, Britain's military forces occupied in Chanak, western Turkey due to the Treaty of Sevres. Two years later, in 1922, the Turkish threatened the British forces in Chanak after successfully pushing out the Greek army. Britain eventually sent a telegram requesting the military aid of the dominions such as Canada, Australia, etc. While everyone was expecting the same results as always (Canada following requests without hesitation), Mackenzie King, the Prime Minister at the time, was thinking differently. He desired more independence from the British Empire; enough independence to be able to decide whether or not to get involved in foreign affairs. King's cabinet eventually agreed that the parliament should be responsible for such matters. When the parliament began discussing the current affair in Chanak, the affair itself was already over.
Significance & Shaping Canadian Identity
- With the help of Mackenzie King, events such as this one pushed Canadian independence beyond what anyone had imagined.
- King's bold actions and stances allow us
to stand independent of Britain today.
- Life may have been quite a bit
different if it were not for him.
- As of now, Canada stands equal to Britain.
