Asserted that
- all people are born equal and have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness
- gov's purpose is to protect those rights
- if gov tries to take those rights away, the people have the right to form a new government
- listed out grievances against the king for violating the agreement btwn the Americans and the British crown
- declared independence from Britain!
