Tsar Alexander III rose to power after the assassination of his father, Alexander II. The reform-minded Alexander II was assassinated by revolutionaries angered by the slow pace of political change in Russia. Alexander III clung to the principles of autocracy similar to his grandfather Nicholas I and despised things he considered "Anti-Russian".
