jun 1, 1979 - Re-election of Moussa Traoré
Description:
With a new constitution's approval in 1974, alongside the creation of a one-party state attempting to move towards civilian rule, Mali seemed to be heading in a hopeful direction. However, military leaders kept power, with a new political party in September of 1976 named the Democratic Union of the Malian People forming. It was based around democratic centralist ideology. During the June elections of 1979, Moussa Traoré, now general, won with 99% votes. After this, much backlash appeared, with many students challenging the government with coups (that ended poorly).
