Mali and Senegal join to form the Mali Federation, which lasted a short amount of time. Prior to independence a year later, two systems of education also existed, alongside French colonialism. These forms are traditional and Islamic. Traditional education mainly prepared adolescents for adult life, with many values of Mali culture being prominently taught. Islamic education, dating back to 14th century Timbuktu taught much of Mali's most popular religion, Islam. Modern day, Mali's population is about 80% Muslim.
