To press home his point Albert dragged Bodenschatz with him to see Heydrich. Face to face with the Nazi executioner, Albert insisted he ‘pay attention to Hermann Goering’s order that the imprisoned be freed’. The personal touch paid off. On 17 January he wrote to Vambersky to confirm the release of all five: ‘I’m happy that my new and somewhat energetic intervention worked immediately.
