-December 25, 1979 – February 15, 1989
- Soviets were scared that President Amin was talking to United States. Then the soviets invaded Afghanistan. They had President Amin put to death and got a new leader, President Babrak Karmal.
- The US was invloved because there was a thought of steering Afghanistan away from Soviet influence and improving U.S. relations. The soviets were involved because they were the ones invading Afghanistan. This is part of the cold war because it shows soviets power and how easily they can attack.
