For the US, the signal terrorist event at the beginning of this third wave of terrorism was Hisballah's bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut in 1983. Hisballah took western hostages, murdered US and French soldiers, attacked a French military base, and in April 1983, bombed the Beirut embassies of both nations. Also forced the multinational peacekeepers to pull out of Lebanon in early 1984
