may 11, 1894 - Pullman Strike
Description:
Illinois-based company forced workers to live in town (higher cost of living) but cut wages. In response, the American Railroad Union (ARU) stopped handling Pullman cars. After 3 workers were fired for complaining, the strike began. But the railroad managers arranged for the mail carts to be tacked on to Pullman cars making refusal a federal offense for inhibiting the mail system. Finally, the government ordered an injunction to halt the boycott that collapsed the strike and the union.
