Major Event 1: The 2008 Olympic Games, formerly known as the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, took place in Beijing, China from August 7-24. The Games showcased Beijing’s new National Stadium and National Swimming Center, both built especially for the Olympic events. MIchael Phelps won a record 8 Olympic gold medals in swimming and Jamaican runner Usain Bolt broke both the 100 meter and 200 meter records to win a third Olympic gold medal. Historically, anti doping tests were stricter for the first time in a long time. In other events, Togo won their first ever Olympic medal and South Korea won the baseball gold medal.
