jun 5, 1876 - Indian Act
Description:
How was it influenced?: In the later years of the act, when society had become less discriminatory towards them, outrage and protest from the Natives led to the repealing and amending of certain sections.
What influence did it have?: It combined two previous acts into one and rewarded the government even greater powers concerning Natives and Native affairs. The Indian Act was an attempt to assimilate the First Nations and later amendments forbade ceremonial practices such as dancing, and required Native children to attend residential schools.
