Description:
Brutus de Villeroi was contracted by the Navy to design the first submarine. It was built from iron and small plates of glass for light on top. It is powered by 16 hand-powered paddles on the sides and is called the Alligator. This submarine was built for the Civil War, but never actually was used for this purpose.
