Description:
United States marine forces captured the island of Iwo Jima from the Japanese. The goal was to capture that island along with three controlled Japanese airfields. Capturing these islands would help provide the Americans with staging areas to help them prepare to fight the main Japanese islands. The battle lasted five weeks and it was the bloodiest battle of the Pacific War.
