dec 7, 1941 - Attack on Pearl Harbor
On "a date that will live in infamy," Japan launched a surprise air and submarine attack on the American naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Hoping to cripple the United States' Pacific fleet and discourage American public opinion from joining World War II, the Japanese killed 2,403 Americans and destroyed or damaged 19 ships. However, the attack "woke the sleeping giant," and the next day Congress declared war on Japan, officially entering WWII.
