The Battle of Iwo Jima was a major battle in which the United States Marine Corps landed on and eventually captured the island of Iwo Jima from the Imperial Japanese Army. This is important because the airfields on the island could serve as a vital emergency landing base for damaged planes and a runway for American fighter planes escorting the bombers to the main islands. This was one of America's final steps in winning the war. Ended March 29, 1945.
