apr 18, 1942 - Doolittle Raid
Description:
The first successful bombing raid over Japan, served a significant morale boost for the US. It also revealed a critical security hole in Japanese defenses around the Pacific, namely around Midway Island. To fix the security the Japanese believed they needed to destroy the US fleet in the pacific and capture Midway Island. Japan also wanted to cut off Australia from their ally (US) and isolate them by capturing the Solomon Islands and New Guinea. The plan failed when the US Pacific forces clashed with the Japanese Navy at the Battle of Coral Sea. The Doolittle Raid was significant because it showed that Japan was vulnerable to an American attack.
