Fall of 1942, Hitler focused on capturing oilfields and the city of Stalingrad in southern Russia. After a 199 day fight, Germany was forced to surrender 108,000 troops to the soviets. This was the first significant loss for Germany and was the beginning of the soviet drive on the Eastern Front to push the Germans back to Berlin. Hitler’s decision to invade the Soviet Union ultimately led to his downfall. Was important because it was the event that eventually lead to Hitler's defeat.
