dec 30, 1941 - battle of the coral sea
Description:
The plan failed when US Pacific Forces led by Admiral Chester Nimitz clashed with the Japanese Navy in the Battle of the Coral Sea in May of 1942, despite the fact that no surface ships exchanged any shots. Instead, all of the fighting was conducted 200 miles apart from the fleets by carrier-launched planes.
