apr 12, 1861 - Battle of Fort Sumter
Description:
General Beauregard sent three men to demand the surrender of Fort Sumter, where they were denied. They then returned to the fort later to decide how to take it over by force until Colonel Chestnut ordered open fire on Fort Sumter. The sides fired back and forth for hours on end until April 13 when the fort was surrendered and evacuated. This battle is significant because it was the very first battle of the Civil War, the spark that would eventually end slavery, and because this was the first official attack on the Union.
