dec 1, 1814 - The Treaty of Ghent
Description:
The treaty of Ghent was signed in Ghent, Belguim on the Christmas Eve of 1814. Great Britain and the US signed the treaty to end the war of 1812. The military situation in North America was so balanced that neither side had achieved its war aims. For Britain, it has been a war of survival for the remaining territories in North America, and thus their diplomats remained on the defensive side. The Americans included firmer talents such as John Quincy Adams, James A. Bayard, and Albert Gallatin.
The two nations met in the neutral state of Belgium in August 1814. They drafted a treaty of 15 initial points, and the British agreed to nine, and two more were added. The final 11 articles became the Treaty of Ghent before Christmas Day of 1814. All conquests were to be returned. Hostilities against the First Nations were to be terminated by both sides, and Britain was not to arm the Aboriginals for operations against the US.
