Union forces had sought to capture of New Orleans, one of the largest cities which belonged to the Confederacy. New Orleans was also home to a large international port and the Mississippi River which were vital to the transportation of various goods and supplies. The Union successfully captured New Orleans, which was a crucial loss for the Confederacy. This event is significant because the Union was able to cut off the flow of supplies to the South and now had access to the Mississippi River, which would allow them to reach other important Confederate cities and capture them.
