Description:
New Jersey passes the "Act for the Gradual Abolition of Slavery" in 1804. The act stated that any baby born after July 4, 1804 would be freed; female babies born after the date would be freed at age 21, whereas, male babies born after would be freed at age 25. However, slave children could be placed in private homes and could still be treated as slaves.
