may 28, 1915 - In Flanders Fields (Poem) -Riel
Description:
In Flanders Field
In the second battle of Ypres, a Canadian artillery Lieutenant by the name Alex Helmer stepped outside of his dugout and was killed instantly by a powerful German shell. His commanding officer John McCrae was very close with Helmer and Alex’s death took the biggest toll on him. Later that same night he was sitting on the back of Helmer’s ambulance with a single tear falling down his cheek, he took out his journal and wrote the famous “In Flanders Fields” poem. There were many Poppies in Flanders Fields in that part of France and as a result it became a symbol for struggle in war and in Canadian history.
