may 28, 1914 - The Sinking of The RMS Empress of Ireland (David)

Description:

The RMS Empress of Ireland is one of the worst shipwrecks in all of Canada’s history. The RMS Empress of Ireland was built in 1905 and inaugurated in 1906; The RMS Empress of Ireland weighed over 14 tons, which is small for a boat. “One of the most luxurious and safest boats on the Canadian Pacific Railway” says the Canadian archives, yet the ship hit the SS STORSTAD, a Norwegian ship. The RMS Empress of Ireland sank near the mouth of the St. Lawrence River, out of one thousand five hundred fourty two (1,542) people only five hundred thirty people (530) managed to survive due to the circumstances of the boat sinking in less than 15 minutes on May 29th 1914. The Sinking of RMS Empress of Ireland was one of the most devastating events in Canadian History with one thousand twelve fatalities. By the RMS Empress of Ireland sinking it has taught Canada to make more reliable boats and to have marine services near every port for emergency calls and better schedules for boats to prevent collisions in the future.
