Description:
The word kuttab stems from kataba, which in Arabic means to write. The main subject taught to village-dwelling children, under the age of 10, was the Qur’an, since kuttab teachers were pious men and women who had knowledge of Islam’s Holy Book, the traditions of the Prophet, and the Arabic language. The classes were informal and took place in a teacher's home or at nearby mosques. They were a mainstay from 1918 to 1938. Most students were male.
