aug 15, 2016 - First Session

Description:

We made a decision to focus on women’s literacy since men would not typically return home before night and were more educated than women in the village generally. We conducted surveys to determine initial literacy levels and interest. Older women generally were not as interested since they saw little point in learning at their age. Younger/middle-aged women showed more interest. Leeluben, the religious head of the village, showed interest due to her own education and provided a space for classes. On the first day of classes, the older girls in the village helped us and seemed quite invested. Seven women attended, all of whom had shown the most interest during initial surveys. While the first class was successful, the learning process was quite slow due to their age and their difficulty seeing. Our curriculum was initially based on a 10-week model with three meetings each.

This class was meant to be a preview to establish a baseline time and meeting place for the students. After several conversations with the villagers and the TC volunteers, we learned that everyone would be more available to begin the class in its entirety in mid-October. The villagers would be free from many of the farm-related activities, and the volunteers would not have exams at school.
