The Dakota attack the fort twice. Once of the 20th and once on the 22nd. The fort had been a place for training and “staging ground” in the Civil War. It suddenly became one of the only forts west of the Mississippi, to withstand a direct attack from the Dakota. The fort’s 280 military and civilian defenders hold out until Army reinforcements end the battle.
