On August 30,1873 Prime Minister John.A.MacDonald created the police force called the North West Mounted Rifles. In 1904 the name got changed to Royal North West Mounted Police. The NWMP were to make sure that people followed the rules of the law for the newly created North West Territories (used to Rupert's Land), which usually meant the pleasure to the white peoples and not so much to the Natives. But, in some opinions people believed the Royal North West Mounted Police were to protect the Native peoples from the whiskey traders and to gain their trust and respect.The NWMP became the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) also known as the Mounties are the Federal police of Canada today.
