Description:
The Lord Stanley Preston offered a trophy to be given to the champion hockey team (in Canada) in 1892. In 1894 5 teams called Montreal A.A.A (Amature Athletic Association) , Montreal Victoria, Montreal Crystals, Ottawa A.A.A, and Quebec A.A.A fought (played hockey) each other to become the champion. Montreal was were it took place, the Montreal team won the first Stanley Cup. The Montreal A.A.A is a very fierce team winning 24 Stanley Cups compared to the Toronto Maple Leafs who won only 13 (for now). The NHL (National Hockey League) took control of the Stanley Cup in 1926. The Stanley Cup is important to Canada's history because it's like a culture and dream for the team you like to win.
