Description:
Magnetic striping was discovered on the seafloor in the west coast of the U.S. The Navy, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Coast, and Geodetic Survey Ship Pioneer had worked together to tow the first magnetometer making this discovery possible.
This event was significant because it reinforced the theory of plate tectonics since it proved that the seafloor was spreading.
