Used propaganda to promote Sunni Islam and unite Muslims in jihad against Franks and liberate Jerusalem.
Propaganda methods: promote and finance range of good works including religious houses, educational establishments, hospices, hospitals and retreats. Public readings in mosques and schools. Poems and books written. Ruled just and fairly.
Also used lack of money - lived life of poverty. Wore plain cloths, renounced alcohol to prove piety. Prayed battles would be won for Islam, not himself. Went on hajj (Mecca pilgrimage).
Was always seen to be promoting jihad.
