mar 21, 1169 - Saladin put in charge of Egypt
Description:
Proved himself to be a very able soldier. Shirkuh had died, Saladin becomes vizier. Many didn't like this decision and left to Damascus, leaving Saladin short of men. Nureddin confiscated his lands and titles in Syria as he was suspicious of Saladin. But, he clung on to rule Egypt as vizier and was winning Nureddin over (name in prayers). Egypt had slipped into Saladin's hands. Nurredin was preparing to fight Saladin as he was gaining power but died before this happened.
Saladin was ruthless and gained the caliph's loyalty when dealing with Nubian uprising.
He put family members in positions of power eg his father as treasurer of Alexandria and Damietta.
Removed name of Fatimid Caliph from Friday prayers, replaced by caliph of Baghdad's name.
Launched attack on Gulf of al-Aqaba and secured route to Mecca.
Very strategic, political tactics keeping family members close. Military strength and ability.
Sound economic basis.
