The Midwest saw a series of droughts throughout the 1930s due to shifting weather patterns over the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans which changed the direction of the Jet Stream making the Great Plains dryer than usual which caused extreme Dust Storms throughout the 1930s. The first drought ravaged 23 states throughout the Mississippi and Ohio River Valleys. The drought caused 30-50% of crops to fail in areas like AR. In 1932, there were 14 dust storms and in 1933 that increased to 48. The 3rd drought in 1934 caused the hottest year on record until 2014. There were 29 consecutive days of 100+ degree temps. Approx. 80% of the country recorded bone dry temps.
